Patient education begins in the surgeon's office. When considering surgery for arthritis of the hip or knee, it is essential for patients to understand their condition and the options for treatment.
At Orthopaedic Specialists of Maryland, we use charts, diagrams and models to enable patients to gain a better understanding of arthritis and joint replacement.
We provide a comprehensive patient-training guidebook specialized for each individual procedure that explains each step of the process from pre-surgery through recovery. Then patients and their families are invited to attend a total joint teaching class. At the class they will meet their care team who will teach what needs to be done prior to surgery; what happens in the hospital each day; and what to expect when they arrive home.
We have found that the better patients are prepared prior to surgery, the quicker they recover and the better their outcomes.
